The Kayaking Life with @danejacksonkayak

To see more photos and videos from Dane Jackson’s epic whitewater kayaking adventures, follow @danejacksonkayak on Instagram.

Plunging through the roiling whitewater of multistory waterfalls is what 21-year-old professional kayaker Dane Jackson (@danejacksonkayak) does best. “I have been kayaking since I was two years old,” says Dane, whose father Eric Jackson (@ericjacksonkayak) is a freestyle kayaking legend and former Olympian. “I was around the river and around kayaking almost every day, so from the beginning I had no doubt I wanted to be a kayaker.”

Based out of Walling, Tennessee, Dane spends nearly 300 days per year on the water, often in remote regions navigating the planet’s most challenging whitewater. “All we can do to prepare for new whitewater is through experience. By running rapids you learn what different things in a rapid affect your boat or your line,” says Dane. “After enough experience you can look at a rapid and have an idea of what’s going to happen on certain features.“

Beyond the adrenaline rush Dane gets from conquering waterfalls and expert-level rapids, he relishes the full experience of being a pro kayaker. “I love being able to travel the world with my family and friends while doing my favorite sport and passion—and at the same time pushing myself physically and mentally.”

My wonderful friend Sam is spending a month in Zambia with the Barefeet Theater Company. Keep track of her journey!

I made it. I’ve officially been in Zambia for a day and a half.

After 20+ hours of travel of which I spent the majority watching movies…I made it.

This Is What New York Looks Like From the Edge of a Skyscraper

Superheroes and window washers aside, most New Yorkers don’t spend much time leaning off rooftops 50 stories above the ground. But the view straight down is fairly spectacular.

It’s a side of the city most people never see in quite this way, which is one of the reasons Navid Baraty’s series of photos ended up on the walls of the Bowling Green subway station as part of the MTA’s Arts for Transit program.
